Interview i det tyske magasin Islandspherde Zucht.

Interviewet er lavet af Henning Drath:

This is an interview Agnar Snorri Stefánsson gave to "Islandpferde Zucht", a new magazine on breeding, published in Germany in February of 2011.

In a nutshell: Our interview with one of the world’s most successful and prominent riders and trainers of breeding horses. „IZ“ talked to Agnar Snorri Stefánsson in the midst of winter training.

IZ: What features do you pay close attention to when you accept a horse for education and training in order to show them at breeding shows later on?

Stefánsson: That depends on a lot of things. Of course, every one of us likes to have good horses in training, but the first impression we get is always through their conformation. That is very important for them to be able to carry themselves and to move well. Add to that some good temperament which I appreciate very much. I really like my horses when I as their rider don’t have to make them move forward but when their spirit is such that they want it, too.

IZ: Is it a special challenge for you to ride horses that have been publicly shown by someone else before?

Stefánsson: Not at all, this is my job and it would be very unprofessional not to accept horses that have been shown before or that allegedly have a certain reputation. On day one, we always have a fresh start, and then we take it from there in order to achieve our best-possible results.

IZ: Have you had any true favorites among the many stallions and mares that you’ve ridden in your career so far?

Stefánsson: Honestly, to this day I’m still so very fond of my gray stallion Fálki frá Sauðárkróki, a son of Fáni. He is the „total package“, if I may say so. Also up there is Magnus fra Dalur whom I rode at the last World Championships. As far as mares are concerned, I really love Mist van de Waaldijk, and there are two more in training right now which I think are really special: Sylgja frá Auðsholtshjáleigu who as a six-year old received 9 for tölt, canter, spirit and form plus 9.5 for trot last year and one of the most well-rounded mares in all gaits: Katla fra Lia i Flatanger, a true jewel owned by Anne Stine.

IZ: Is there a difference in how you train your horses for FIZO breeding shows and for sports competitions?

Stefánsson: Not really, and I know that some people see this differently, but I personally don’t see such a big difference in how I train my horses for either purpose. I really like my sports horses to have the same level of power and natural forward-mindedness, then again while this kind of spirit is easier to show on a straight track in breeding shows, in sports you obviously need a better technique to handle the corners well and to change in full motion e.g. from 4-beat to 2-beat.

IZ: What’s the plan for 2011 – when and where does your season start?

Stefánsson: My first FIZO show this year will be at Kronshof in Germany, and while, of course, we’ll have to see how well our horses get through the winter and the current stages of training, I’ll most certainly want to show my son of Þokki frá Kýrholti there: Styrkur frá Eystri-Hól. And a new addition here at Gavnholt is Fengur fra Staagerup whom I’ll also want to give a go at Kronshof

IZ: Thanks for the interview and continued success to you!
